Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. Practitioners in this field examine tissues and lesions in the oral cavity, jaws, and related structures to identify and characterize abnormalities. Their expertise lies in diagnosing a wide range of conditions, including oral cancers, infections, autoimmune diseases, and developmental anomalies.
The importance of oral and maxillofacial pathology is to diagnose and control oral and maxillofacial diseases accurately. Pathology studies the causes of these diseases, their effects, and their relation to systemic diseases, connecting basic science to clinical medicine. By examining macroscopic features of tissue samples as well as accurate microscopic examination of the biopsy sample of the patient's tissues, and based on clinical signs radiography, and other diagnostic techniques in the required cases, oral and maxillofacial pathologists leave the interpretation and final diagnosis to the specialists who referred the patient. By integrating pathology into dental care, oral and maxillofacial pathologists play a key role in improving patient outcomes and advancing our understanding of the intricate complexities of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.
